Unity Church Building
The
Unity church building, designed by architect Sig Bjornsen, enhances and
supports the mission and well being of the Unity Center of Cedar Rapids.
Completed in 1983, its passive solar design departs from conventional
church architecture and reflects Unity's positive and progressive nature.
At the time of its construction, it was believed to be the largest passive
solar building in existence and the only such building to be built as a
church. The light, brightness, and warmth in the wintertime contrast with a
cool, subdued atmosphere in the summertime. Nature alone does a good job of
providing comfort in this
building,
but a full heating and air conditioning system provides assistance when
nature needs some help. The high glass-enclosed south side gives a modern,
appealing look inside and out.
Over
fifty plants and a fountain co-exist with our day-to-day life in the
building. The high ceiling courtyards provide a perfect place for people to
greet each other, visit, and establish fellowship. The building is
handicapped accessible; the two steps leading up to the podium are the only
ones in the entire building. Seating in the sanctuary consists of
comfortable individual chairs that are a natural for meditation during the
service and allow flexibility for making different seating arrangements
within the sanctuary.
Another
asset of the building is its location, near four main arteries of traffic:
Interstate 380, U.S. Highway 100, Edgewood
Road, and Boyson Road. Click here for a map.
